18 Best Ways To Develop Healthy Eating Habits In Kids
"Trying to feed your kid is no herculean task" - said no mother ever. Most children are fussy eaters, and getting them to eat healthy food is not easy. We are all aware of the importance of nutrition and healthy eating, and what with the increase in health related problems, leading a healthy lifestyle is a must. Eating right will help the child in his or her growth and development, keep diseases at bay and help maintain an average, healthy weight. Also, teaching a child to eat healthy, will ensure that the child follows the same even when they are older. So how do we incorporate good food habits for children? Here's how -
1.Firstly, and this goes without saying - follow the set rules yourself. If as a parent or guide, you plan on inculcating healthy eating habits for children, then you need to do the same yourself. Children ape what adults do, especially if the adult in question is a parent or relative. So if you want your child to eat healthy, then you need to eat healthy too.
2. It's okay to let the child indulge once in a while. You don't have to go all out and criminalize everything that is labeled as "junk". We all love junk, and indulging in it once in a while in moderation is fine. You don't have to deprive your child of junk food all the time.
3. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day - make sure you let your child know this. Children are active and they need energy right from the start of the day, so their first meal is extremely necessary. You need to ensure that the child makes a habit out of it.
4. A lot of parents are quick to label their kids as fussy eaters - which is a fact - but your child doesn't need to know that. When you call them picky, and tell others the same before them, they tend to develop a block. When you say things like "he hates vegetables", you are emphasizing on that fact, automatically creating a block for the child.
5. Colors and shapes fascinate kids. Try to incorporate this into the healthy foods that you cook. Cut down vegetables in fun shapes, and arrange them in fun shapes on a plate before you offer this to your child.
6. Make sure you include a fair amount of fiber in the food you cook for your child. A lot of kids suffer from constipation and other bowel issues - avoid this by making the child consume fruits like bananas, apples, oranges and raspberries, vegetables like carrots, beetroots, broccoli and beans. Oatmeal is a great source of fiber as well.
7. Involve your kids in the whole process of cooking. Let them know what goes into the making of the food they eat. Calling them into the kitchen so they can watch you cook, and allowing them to help you while cooking will make them eat the food on their plate, because they get a sense of working hard, for the food they eat.
8. Make sure you have proper meal times, and maintain these meal times consistently. Kids need to be taught the importance of having their meals on time - this will ensure that they make a habit of this, following the same in the long run as well.
9. Your child should know what he or she is eating, and the importance of it. Tell the child the importance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and everything else that is being consumed, and its benefits.
10. Make sure your child sits at the table during every meal. Most kids these days are either glued to the television or playing games on the computer while eating. This is one habit that should not be inculcated, because research shoes that this can lead to obesity, as the brain is not keeping track of what you're eating, and it concentrating on the television or computer instead.
11. Make sure you incorporate some physical activity and exercise in your child's daily routine - this helps in creating a healthy appetite and helps in the growth and development of your child as well.
12. Incentives and rewards work wonders for children. Set down a few rules with regard to health eating, and promise them rewards in the end, if these rules are followed. Rewards work as great motivation for kids.
13. Have at least one meal together. Most parents have a busy schedule, so eating every meal together is probably difficult, but make sure you have one meal together as a family - preferably dinner time. While this works as good family time, you also get to see how your kid eats - chances of eating junk are minimized as well.
14. Start reading the labels on the food you buy - ask your kids to do the same as well. This will make both you and your child conscious of what he or she is eating. Knowing what's going in will be like an eye opener - a can of corn? roughly 350 calories, a pack of Oreos? that's 300 calories straight. Knowing all this will help you keep a tab on your health and control it.
15. If you have time, try and indulge in activities like gardening, and ask your child to be a part of it. The child will enjoy eating the vegetables and fruits you've grown.
16. Fill your refrigerator with healthy food. Stack it up with fruits and vegetables, so that your child does not binge eat on junk. and eats healthy and munches on nutritious foods when hungry.
17. Don't use negative reinforcements to force a child to eat what he or she doesn't like.
18. Don't give up. As mentioned before, kids can be choosy about their food, but you need to be patient with them. They'll thank you later.
As we mentioned before, developing good food habits for children plays a key role in the development and health of the child. It also helps them mould into adults who lead a healthy lifestyle. Here are a few healthy food habits that you should inculcate in your child, starting from now -

How to Celebrate Gudi Padwa with your Family
India is a country of many states, religions, communities and cultures, which translates into several occasions for everyone to enjoy! Most communities don't follow the Gregorian calendar, instead they stick to the more traditional solar or lunar systems. Thus, there are different new year days too, one such being Gudi Padwa, the start of the traditional Maharashtrian New Year.
Gudi Padwa is associated with the lunisolar calendar followed by Maharashtrians. The day coincides with the first day of the bright phase of the moon. It also has other significant associations, one being the start of spring or time of harvest and the other being the day that Lord Brahma created the world. The festival also honors the famous Maratha monarch, Shivaji Maharaj, who started the practice of hoisting the Gudi.
The festival day, usually comes around towards the end of March or the start of April according to the Gregorian calendar. Even though we live in the cyber age, Maharashtrians around the world celebrate Gudi Padwa in true traditional style without too many modern dilutions. In case you’re wondering what to do on Gudi Padwa, here is a look at how this festival is observed in authentic Maharashtrian style.
Festival Preparations
As with any other festival, preparations for Gudi Padwa begin with shopping! New clothes are bought for the whole family, along with the articles necessary for the Gudi and colors for the rangoli. Other decorations and household articles are also bought.
Some people consider this an auspicious time for buying high value products, and hence they go ahead and buy gold, silver or other household appliances. Markets are also busy with vendors selling their wares at special prices. While many still make their own sweetmeats, some prefer ready made versions, so orders are placed at sweet shops well in advance.
Decorations
Gudi Padwa signifies the start of spring, so an episode of spring cleaning is in order! The entire family gets together to declutter and clean the house inside out, thus, making it sparkle. Torans of flowers and leaves are hung indoors and outdoors, giving the entire neighborhood a festive feel. The main door or entrance is given special attention. In villages, the courtyards are swept and plastered with cow dung mixed with sand.
Getting Ready
The day begins early, where everyone in the family takes oil baths and gets ready in their new clothes. Most people prefer wearing traditional Maharashtrian clothes on this day, to honor and celebrate their unique culture. Some women wear nine yard saris, generally in silk or brocade, also called the ‘navvari’, while others prefer the more common 5 – meter version of the sari. Men wear long shirts with dhotis and Nehru caps. Women also deck themselves out with colorful bangles and flowers in their hair.
Hoisting the Gudi
This is the main event of the Gudi Padwa celebration. The Gudi consists of a long bamboo pole, covered with a brightly colored brocade fabric, topped with an inverted copper or brass pot. In some cases, a coconut and/or mango leaves are placed under the pot. A garland of flowers is tied around this arrangement and turmeric and sandalwood pastes are applied on it. The Gudi is hoisted to the right of the main entrance of the house so that it is visible. The family then worships the Gudi, and prays for the New Year to bring prosperity, health and happiness into their homes. A rangoli is drawn on the floor in front of the Gudi, usually by the women of the household. The Gudi is indicative of a flag of victory and is also believed to ward off evil and bring good luck to all the members of the household.
Festive Delicacies
On Gudi Padwa, the festive feast usually begins with a special kind of chutney or paste prepared from neem leaves and a souring agent like raw mango or tamarind along with jaggery. This mixture is believed to purify one’s blood and strengthens immunity. It is also considered the official start of the feast, which features local delicacies like the Puran Poli, which is a sweet flatbread and a famous Maharashtrian dish. The feast also includes Shrikhand, a sweet dish made of dry fruit and yogurt; Puris, deep fried flat breads and Aam Panna, a beverage made of raw mango and spices.
Besides celebrating, Maharashtrians also consider Gudi Padwa an auspicious day and thus, the perfect occasion for starting a new venture like inaugurating a shop or an office, conducting pujas or housewarmings. रीमा और शशि के दो फूल जैसे बच्चे है एक बेटी 20 साल व एक बेटा 15 साल का। जैसे तैसे रीमा नौकरी करके अपने बच्चों को अच्छे संस्कार देते हुए एक कान्वेंट स्कूल में अध्ययन करा रही थी ।
शशि भी किसी रेपुटेड कंपनी में कार्यरत था । शशि को दो भाई और दो बहनें हैं, जो पहले साथ में ही रहते थे और मां भी साथ ही थी । रीमा के माता-पिता की एक सड़क दुर्घटना में मौत हो चुकी थी । वह अपने माता-पिता की इकलौती बेटी थी । बड़े ही अरमानों के साथ अपनी बेटी का विवाह शशि के साथ किया था और सोचा कि भरे-पूरे परिवार में बेटी सुखी रहेगी । विवाह के बाद सब सामान्य ही चल रहा था ।
शशि ने भी अपने भाई-बहनों के विवाह रीमा की कोशिश एवं सहयोग से संस्कारों को निभाते हुए ही पूर्ण रूप से किया । हर काम माजी की अनुमति से ही हुआ । शशि के पिता पहले ही स्वर्ग सिधार चुके थे, सो सारी जिम्मेदारी शशि के ऊपर थी । "पहले की कोई जमा पूंजी निवेश था नहीं " जो शशि को सहायता होती ।
लेकिन फिर भी रीमा और शशि ने सभी जिम्मेदारियों को पूरा किया और मां भी साथ ही रह रही थी । अचानक एक दिन शशि की अपने भाई-बहनों के साथ कुछ अनबन हो गई और उसकी मां छोटी बहन के साथ ही रहने लगी ।" मां ने भी सही कारण जानने की कोशिश नहीं की और ये भी मालूम नहीं था कि किस कारण से अनबन हो गई " । अक्सर परिवार में कुछ ऐसा ही हो जाता है जिसका खामियाजा निर्दोष लोगों को भुगतना पड़ता है और साथ ही साथ छोटे बच्चों पर उसका सीधा असर होता है ।
शशि की नौकरी भी है अच्छी खासी , भगवान की कृपा से दो बच्चे हैं और एक सुशिक्षित पत्नी के साथ अच्छी जिंदगी निर्वाह करता तो घर गृहस्थी के तनाव में शराब की लत लग गई और रोज यही सिलसिला शुरू हो गया ।
हालांकि कंपनी में साथ काम करने वाले साथियों ने भी बहुत समझाया पर शशि को समझ में नहीं आ रहा था ।
इन सब उलझनों में बेचारे बच्चों का क्या कसूर ? वे तो फूल जैसे कोमल मन के होते हैं, उनको मारना कहां तक उचित है ? रोज जब शशि घर में नशे में ऐसा करता तो बेचारी बच्चों को दूसरे कमरे में बंद कर देती । उसे यही लगता कि बच्चों पर मानसिक रूप से प्रभाव ना पड़े । वह बच्चों को भी सही ग़लत के बारे में बताती रहती । "उसे हर पल यही लगता कि सरकार द्वारा नशावृत्ति रोकने के लिए सभी कदम उठाने के बाद भी नशा करने वाले को समझ में क्यो नही आती"? ये भी नहीं समझता कि देश में शराब के धंधे करने वाले लोगों पर रोक लगाना, जरूरी नहीं है ?
एक दिन अचानक ही शशि की कंपनी से उसका संस्पेंशन आदेश आ गया और शशि एकदम अवाक रह गया , उसनेे रीमा को बताया और रोने लगा, उसे अपनी गलती का अहसास हो गया था पर अब बहुत देर हो चुकी थी, फिर भी रीमा ने हिम्मत के साथ कहा कोई बात नहीं, देर आए दुरुस्त आए । दोनों ने कंपनी में अपने अधिकारियों से मिलकर माफी मांगी और संस्पेशन आदेश रद्द कर दिया गया । उस दिन दोनों ही बहुत खुश थे और शशि ने वादा किया अपने आप से कि वह अपने मासूम से बच्चों को इस तरह से कभी नहीं मारेगा ।
अधिकतर यह देखा गया है कि घर में इस तरह से बड़े लोगों के विवादों में बच्चों का बचपन खो जाता है , कोशिश करें बचपन खोने मत दिजीए ।

Is Comparison a Boon, or a Curse?
Kirti, how old is your baby a women asked me yesterday when I was having a walk in my society? I told she is 16 months the response was a shock she doesn't look like a 16 month and why she is not running? That women commented along with sarcasm concluding that her daughter started everything in 11 months.
Is your baby sitting, walking, running and talking? If yes then it's late. Our's did it very early and if no what kind of mother you are? Every child is different and have their own schedule of their activities. They should not be compared with anyone not in the family, surroundings or any where else.Not even this when babies grows to kids they are being compared on studies, games and everything.
This is so common in our society and it is growing day by day. This comparison has led our lives to be a race in which no one has time for themselves. Since birth every child is compared with siblings at home or relatives or neighbours then schoolmates then college mates and then with their colleagues.
Do you think comparison is good for healthy competition? Each baby or child has a schedule to reach a milestone which they will achieve sooner or later. It's better to give them time to achieve.
Why there is a need of comparison at every levels? Firstly babies are compared then this get extended to school then college then job then marriage then their kids are compared it's like a cycle going on.
It would be great if everyone start polishing their child with his or her wish and not what the others are doing.
No one is same every person has his own identity and talent.
Comparison in mind makes our future generations not human beings.

They say, it takes a village to raise a child, but during the current pandemic, it’s more like a muqin (mother in Mandarin) is raising the village!
Who am I… well, yet to find an answer to that one.. but currently a psychologist and a mother to three (two boys and a counselling centre).
So it all started 43 days ago. Gosh! I didn’t think I could pull it that far! Supercharged and pumped up (after quitting the real pumping ordeal barely a few days prior) for the Janta Curfew, as requested by our nation’s leader, we happily gave a break to my maid brigade. Well, I am. Rather, I WAS a royal in that segment. Had 7 of them! (two at my husband’s house, 3 at my mom’s house and 2 nannies for both my boys so I could take care of my third baby during the day) Oh by the way, for those wondering about this dual home set up. That’s the best postulation ever, by my Dear Husband! When we moved from Mumbai (a part of me still lives there) to our hometown 6 years ago, I whacked my brains at various educational institutions in the city, trying to establish the role of a counsellor but came back home each day frustrated and demotivated. He then pushed me to start my own practice. And advised my parents to chuck off their tenants so I could open up my centre there and they get to see me back then, and now, with both my monsters – every Monday to Saturday! What a win-win situation! Guess that’s why this Punjabi married that Baniya. Will share in-depth, crazy love, marriage and parenting ride of mine, soon enough. But for now, let’s get back to the current crises.
Within 48 hours of the adrenaline rush most of us experienced by clapping and ‘thaali bajao‘ moments for our corona warriors, came the biggest shock of my life, 20 days without a single domestic warrior! 2 toddlers, 3-floored Bajaj Bhawan (which is more of a Hawa Mahal that requires infinite cleaning) AND staying at home 24×21! I was flabbergasted! The only silver lining in this darkest overcast ever, was my knight in shining armour, standing tall and determined, with his weaponry…oops utensils, proclaiming “B, I’ll do the dishes every time”. Those words had more compassion than the “I Love You” I heard 17 years ago. These unprecedented times have changed lot of things in and around us. The very first thing I noticed, we started calling each other Ramu kaaka and Gangu bai instead of “Pati” and “B” from B.C. (Before Corona times)
So it took me another 48 hours to gather myself and accept the new normal, chalk out a plan for the household chores and toddlers’ tasks. Mind you, that doesn’t include any fancy activities and creative task schedules with them. I don’t plan to either. Well, that I will explain in my next write up. But since then (for the next 19 days), I had this new sense of being productive and independent! And clearly boredom had no scope because every day was a new challenge and I love challenges!
With little learnings from my academic certifications and more so from on-the-job training in quaran-times, here are some takeaways for life in any crises situation. As experts say, if we don’t learn a lesson of co-existence with nature, we will witness more pandemics from now on.
Clear division of household chores, even if the other significant adults in the house feel you are torturing their “Lai Chhora” with the disgraceful yet essential domestic tasks. Do not try to become the “Octopus Mom”, you’ll either crash in two days or end the days in Maa Kaali avatar.
However irritated/ exhausted you are, don’t pour it out on your offspring. Show them some love, you’ll get it back in manifolds and take all your blues away.
Reward yourself! Keep that 1 hour in a day to do what you like most. Trust me, your performance (in any kind) will double in the remaining waking hours. Like-
video calling your girl’s gang
watching some stand-up comedy or any web series
reading that book lying in your bookshelf since ages waiting to be dusted at least
dancing it out with your partner or kiddos
rekindle any long lost hobby to burst those stress bubbles
Also, got this exciting idea from a dear friend, plan a late-night date with candles and music for just the two of you (well an hour might not be enough for that one)!
And now my secret weapon, with 100% positive feedback from family and friends!
DO NOT indulge in arguments! This pandemic cannot bring men to Venus or take us to Mars! You are anyway seeing each other way too much and topped with the extra workload, the Clash of Clans are inevitable. I know it might sound impossible, but even my Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy trainings remind me of converting “Demands” into “Requests”. And wrap up each task accomplished with a smile (even if you have to fake it) and thank you! For those who are facing conflicts with partners or parents or teens or toddlers or pets, try this bulletproof scheme!
Time literally flew by in lockdown 1.0 and in 2.0, we took a short vacation to the Bahamas to refuel for the long road ahead! Stay tuned to know how. Also, leave in your super honest comments to help me perk up my new found hobby.

A. since the follicle size is 18 to 20 mm your ovulation may occur within 24 hours also so if you have intercourse with in that time it will be more effective to get conceived
