FAQs
Here are some frequently asked questions related to baby creams and lotions:
1. Why Do Babies Need Lotions or Creams?
Babies have soft and delicate skin which loses moisture after giving them a bath. They tend to lose five times more moisture than we do. Having such dry skin can cause rashes or irritation. Using creams or lotions can help rectify this problem and provide extra moisture to their skin.
2. What is the Difference Between Baby Cream and Baby Lotions?
Lotions have a thinner consistency than creams. The consistency of creams tends to be on the thicker side. Lotions work well on those who have oily or normal skin since they provide basic moisturisation. Creams, on the other hand, provide a deeper level of moisturisation and are good for those with really dry skin.
3. When Can I Start Using Baby Lotion and Cream for My Newborn?
Babies with normal skin do not require lotions or creams for a while, those with dry skin can benefit from it. You can start using lotions by around two months of age if your baby needs it.
4. What Ingredients to Look For in Skincare Products for Babies?
When buying a baby skin care products, look for ingredients such as aloe vera, coconut oil, Olive oil, glyceryl stearate, shea butter, cocoa butter, glycerine and other gentle ingredients. Avoid products containing parabens and other harsh chemicals like sulphates as they strip the skin of moisture.
5. Scented or Unscented Baby Lotion - Which One Should I Choose?
When it comes to baby skin care, it is best to opt for unscented varieties or those that use natural fragrances as these are gentler on the skin. Fragrances often cause allergic reactions or irritations in sensitive skin.
6. Can I Use Moisturising Lotion on My Baby’s Face?
While lotions and creams are not harmful to baby skin, it is not completely necessary for you to moisturise unless they are suffering from very dry skin. If you decide you want to, the best moisturising lotion to use on your baby’s face is one without fragrance.
While you really do not need to jump right into moisturising your baby soon after birth, many parents are uncomfortable with the sight of their baby’s peeling skin. However, this is a normal process as babies need to shed the Vernix layer of the skin that protected them in the womb. With these great options for you, you are sure to find something that suits your baby’s skin needs.

Typhoid During Pregnancy - Reasons, Symptoms, and Treatment
Pregnancy is a time of heightened awareness as a pregnant woman needs to be extra careful in everything she does. When a woman is pregnant, she needs to take extra care of herself as a lot of complications can arise during this time. During pregnancy, a woman may also contract certain infections which might lead to severe diseases. One such disease which a pregnant woman may suffer from is typhoid. Typhoid fever can be detrimental for the health of the pregnant woman and the baby growing in her womb. Read on to learn more about this disease and how it can be treated.
What Is Typhoid?
Typhoid is a bacterial infection which can lead to a high fever, vomiting and diarrhoea. It is caused by the Salmonella typhi. It is actually a bacterial infection that spreads rather easily. The bacteria generally spreads from the intestines, multiplying as it progresses in the bloodstream and gradually affects the organs. The symptoms of typhoid include gastrointestinal problems and a high fever.
Paratyphoid is also a similar disease which is caused by the bacteria salmonella paratyphi but it is lesser of the two evils as its effects are generally milder. The bacteria Salmonella typhi that causes typhoid also causes food poisoning.
What Are the Causes?
Typhoid fever is caused by poor hygiene and lack of sanitation. Poor quality of drinking water is probably one of the major causes of contracting a bacterial infection. Human waste if infected with the bacteria is also a reason for typhoid. Using public toilets that do not have proper sanitation facility can also cause typhoid. Basically, any contact in any form with an infected person or exposure to areas where there is a lack of hygiene can cause this highly contagious disease.
Signs and Symptoms
There are many symptoms of typhoid and most of them are similar to the symptoms of malaria. Hence, the diagnosis of this disease becomes difficult. But the symptoms of typhoid, however, begin to manifest anywhere between 6 and 30 days of exposure to bacteria. Following are the symptoms of typhoid:
High fever combined with vomiting
Weakness and exhaustion
Fast and severe weight-loss
Loss of hunger
Severe abdominal pain
Frequent headaches
Constipation or diarrhoea
Chest congestion
How Does Typhoid Infection Spread?
The bacteria salmonella typhi lives in the intestines and bloodstream of humans and spreads into other organs and tissues of the body. This infection spreads in the following cases:
Living in areas which have poor water quality and poor sewage disposal can make the typhoid infection to spread. Drinking contaminated water can also make the infection to spread.
Eating raw fruits and vegetables that are grown in the farms that are irrigated with sewage water can cause the infection to spread. One must wash the fruits and veggies well before eating them and avoid drinking raw milk and flavoured drinks as they may carry salmonella bacteria.
Typhoid spreads easily through the faecal-oral transmission. Poor hygiene practices such as not washing hands after using a bathroom and using public toilets that are dirty may cause the infection to spread.
Typhoid is a highly contagious disease. It can easily spread through the hand-to-mouth transmission. This means that if you share anything with an infected person, there is a good chance that you may contract the disease. Since typhoid can be contracted in poor living conditions, a large number of people can be affected, giving way to an epidemic.
How Is the Typhoid Vaccine Administered During Pregnancy?
When a woman is pregnant, her immune strength is low so she may contract the typhoid infection. This is why taking a vaccination for the same is suggested. If you indeed run a risk of contracting typhoid from exposure, vaccination is available in order to prevent the same. Instead of the live vaccine (which can be detrimental for the health of the baby), pregnant women are usually administered the inactivated polysaccharide vaccine type Vi. Pregnant women are advised to get vaccinated at least two weeks before the threat of exposure.
Diagnosis
As mentioned the symptoms of typhoid are similar to the symptoms of malaria and dengue. Hence, this disease cannot be diagnosed on the basis of its symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms may help a doctor diagnose the disease, but in most cases, the usual signs are not enough to be able to establish the onset of typhoid. So if the fever lasts for more than a week, the doctor might suggest a Widal test in order to determine the disease. Your doctor may also ask you to take a haemoglobin test or bone marrow order to determine the disease.
Treatment for Typhoid
Typhoid is usually treated with antibiotics. The usual time period for treating typhoid is 7-14 days. Sometimes, it is mostly the fever that you can really take medicines for. To combat the symptoms of typhoid, you should take care of yourself at home by following a proper pregnancy diet, drinking lots of fluids and taking good care of yourself. The trick is to cut off exposure from the infected person so that the infection does not spread.
Typhoid can be difficult to treat during pregnancy. The usual antibiotics used to treat typhoid are generally not given to pregnant women as they prove to be a threat to the baby. In such a scenario, typhoid is treated with third-generation cephalosporins and ampicillin/amoxicillin. However, these medicines should only be taken after consulting with a doctor.
What Are the Complications?
If a woman has typhoid fever during pregnancy, it can affect her health as well as her baby's health adversely. If the disease remains undiagnosed and untreated, there is a high risk of a miscarriage. As a result of the typhoid fever, a woman may feel weak for days and she may even go on a liquid diet for some time. As a result, the baby may not get enough nutrition for his proper growth and development.
If a woman contracts typhoid infection during pregnancy, there are high chances of the baby being born prematurely or underweight. In addition, oral active vaccinations can seriously prove to be dangerous for the baby.
How to Protect Yourself From Getting Typhoid
If you want to prevent yourself from contracting the typhoid infection during pregnancy then you must maintain proper hygiene and sanitation. Taking simple precautions such as washing hands before cooking, before eating, and after using the toilet can help you take care of yourself. Here is what you can do to prevent this infection:
Eat healthy food and at hygienic places. The food should be cooked well and not contaminated.
Drink plenty of fluids and good safe drinking water.
Maintain a safe distance from the people who are already suffering from this disease.
Avoid eating raw fruits and vegetables and undercooked meat.
Maintain proper sanitation in your home.
Follow good personal hygiene - wash your hands well after using the toilet and before and after your meals.
FAQs
1. Can Typhoid Vaccine Cause Birth Defects?
There is no study that proves that typhoid vaccine can lead to birth defects in the baby unless the pregnant lady ends up choosing active vaccination instead of polysaccharide vaccine. In the case of an active vaccine, the baby may be born with birth defects.
2. Can Typhoid Vaccine Cause a Miscarriage?
If the typhoid disease remains undiagnosed and is left untreated during pregnancy, then the woman may have a miscarriage. However, the pregnant woman is given an inactivated (or killed) vaccine, which is safe and poses no harm to the baby. A woman should not be given a live vaccine for typhoid during pregnancy as it may prove to be hazardous for the health of her baby.
3. How Does Typhoid Affect the Pregnant Woman and Her Baby?
A pregnant woman may feel fatigued because of this disease. The mother's body may weaken considerably making it next to impossible for her to take the pregnancy to term. Also, since treatment includes a liquid diet mostly, both the mother and the baby may lose out on nutrition.
If the disease is not treated in time, there are high chances of a miscarriage. In case the bacteria reaches the baby, there is a good chance that there might be some deformity at birth or the baby may be born prematurely or weigh less.
4. Can the Typhoid Vaccine Cause Learning and Behavioural Problems in the Child?
There are no proven studies to suggest the same.
For mothers who have been given inactivated vaccine during the 1st month of pregnancy and typhoid has been successfully prevented, there is no chance of the baby being infected in any way.
Precautions to Take
Typhoid can be prevented by maintaining proper hygiene. Wash your hands, drink boiled water or water from safe sources, wash vegetables and fruits before eating them, eat well-cooked food and keep toilets clean and you should be fine!
During pregnancy, a woman should take care of herself in the best possible way. Typhoid can be fatal so one must take care of herself to prevent this disease. By following the prevention tips mentioned above you can stay safe during pregnancy and protect yourself from contracting this contagious disease. Read more

6 Makeup Products That Battle the Effects of Humidity!
Now that the weather is a weird cross between sunny days, rain and humidity, it is a tough job staying fresh-faced. The sun can play havoc with skin and make it clammy. The humidity can also be particularly harsh. When skipping the makeup is not an option, use the right kind of sweat proof makeup to breathe easy!
Hate the feeling of sweat trickling down your face on a hot day and your makeup running down eventually? You don't have to go through this embarrassment anymore. Switch to humidity-proof beauty products that'll keep you looking fresh despite the heat.
6 Makeup Products For a Sweat-Free Look
1. Au-naturel loose powder
Heavy liquid and cream foundations are prone to melting and do nothing to reduce the oily effect. Powders are a perfect substitute. Mattifying mineral powder, in particular,is lightweight and doesn’t clog the pores even when it mixes with sweat and oil. The result is a spotlessly clean face and an au-naturel polished look no matter how many hours you're under the sun.
2. Liners and mascara
The most telling feature of a face is the eyes, and if you’re not careful with your eye makeup, a few hours braving the sun could turn you into a horrendous sight! Sweat proof makeup for the eyes should include a water resistant eyeliner and smudge-proof mascara and kohl. These products can withstand sticky situations and sweat-filled days with vigour. What you should avoid are wax based pencils as they don’t pass the humidity test.
3. Summer eyeshadow
Dark colours, no doubt, make eyes stand out, but this season calls for pastel eye shadows that provide light coverage. To ensure your eyeshadow doesn’t crease, apply it over an eyelid primer for a smooth finish. Also, for a long lasting effect, use powder eyeshadows instead of creamy ones.
4. Oil-free foundation
The best makeup for humid weather is oil-free makeup. So, if you must wear foundation, make sure it’s oil-free so your face doesn’t end up with a shine that is not the kind you're looking for. A better solution would be to apply an oil-free tinted moisturiser, which gives the skin a soft hint of colour and a much more radiant appearance.
5. Matte lip colors
Lipsticks that are creamy or buttery in texture will just melt off and spread around the lips. Matte lipsticks are ideal for humid weather as they tend to stay in place. You might even want to skip the lip gloss because it tends to slide around. A more suitable alternative is lip balm on naked lips and a satin or matte lipstick to top it off.
6. Cheek colour
When it comes to blush, you can go with a cream or powder formula depending upon the texture of your skin. This is one of those things you need in your humidity resistant makeup kit. If you have dry or normal skin, creamy cheek colors sink in well and smoothen out nicely on the apples of your cheeks. If you’ve got oily skin, go for powder blushes as a creamy blush will only cause you to feel greasy.
With the right makeup, you can look your sizzling best even in hot, sultry weather. These humidity proof makeup products are the perfect solution to end all your makeup woes. Read more

IVF or Natural Two Pink Lines is All That Matters
"Start using your mind to help your body conceive"
When the mind is stressed, it will not help you conceive. Honestly, if you're stressed how can you think of even wanting a newborn in your life?
In today's fast driven lifestyle, everyone is strained out. Expensive cars, promotion, loans, expensive vacations is just taking a toll on everyone's health. The stress hormone has taken over the love hormone.
There's pressure everywhere; pressure of jobs, EMI and to add on: the pressure of having a child tops everyone's list these days.
The same happened with me in 2012. I got married in December 2011 and the anxiety in everyone's mind started to build up to become a Dadi, Nani, Massi in one year .
Everyone was after my life to have a baby:
By 2013 midway, I gave into this pressure.
My husband and I started to plan our family. By 2014, all our plans had failed. In the hospital, a file 'Infertility' under my name was made. Believe me, this word is horrifying, especially when you are perfectly normal and all your reports are positive., But that's the doctor's lingo.
This word shook me, and I took up the challenge to omit this word from my life. I didn't want to be called infertile all my life. Just cause stress had built on me, did not mean am lifeless.
In 2015, I started with my treatment, all kind of injections, medicines and IUI's - everything went in vain. ,Every month the pregnancy kits showed one pink line. All these medications took a toll on my health, I gained a lot of weight, and had a lot of acne. (My pictures always needed to be edited for FB or WhatsApp).
This was killing me even more. I really wanted to conceive, but all I got was a single pink line. I cried every month in the washroom all by myself.
Every month I used to bring in new Josh of getting a positive one, next month. (How's the Josh? High Sir).
Then I met Dr. Suman Puri at DMC Ludhiana. She changed my life and gave me a new perspective on how to get pregnant. She told me about IVF.
I had studied about it during my Biotechnology days, but I was quite apprehensive.
She told me that IVF is for those couples who are blessed by God to have a baby. She then said, IVF helps couples to have their own baby, but through assistance.
She then guided me that I was being treated for infertility, and there was nothing shameful about it. As it's important to understand that there are new ways to give birth to a human being, which is the most beautiful part of being a woman.
2016, I left my job. With my husband's and family support I started my treatment and on 31 Aug 2016 I saw those two beautiful pink lines .
Process of achieving pregnancy through IVF is different than a natural one, but after a positive result the journey is same.
So ladies, don't let the stress of not getting pregnant take over your life. There's hope, there's a way out for everything. In the end, Two Pink Lines is what matters, and it's all worth it.
