Saga of the Rash - Not-so-rare Cow Milk Protein Allergy Decoded
So the dreaded rash - Mr R chose Baby A’s bum as his new abode.
Not a big deal, right? Mr R visits almost every tot. I had read about it in several parenting blogs. To notify about Mr R’s entry, I phoned my ever-busy hubby who was out of the country. Like a good father, he did some research and told me to get a "Sudocrem". Tada! "Sudocrem" worked its magic and Mr R sluggishly started making its way out rendering Baby A somewhat settled.
Then came the night - the night of howling, crying and sobbing accompanied by projectile vomiting and episodes of diarrhoea. Poor Baby A was terrified, as Mr R had now taken over her bum once again. The next morning, I fixed an appointment with the doctor. He told that my baby was colicky and scolded me for using too many diapers. This was far from actuality as I always gave a lot of diaper-free time to her. Nevertheless, I made up my mind to stop the use of diapers entirely. My modest dressing table that once bragged of Mac and Chanel, was now sporting antifungal ointments and diaper rash creams. Debugging began on Baby A’s bum; some with technical expertise and the others with “gharelu ilaaj”. But Mr R was adamant. He did not go away. I prayed, I chanted and even bribed Mr.R and offered him my own bum, but alas! Mr R was harsh and stubborn. He was brazenly multiplying like anything. Most of the doctors asked me to wait as the rash takes time to ebb.
Then one day, Baby A bawled repeatedly and turned blue. I grabbed her and took her to the doctor instantaneously. This time I was advised to stop my consumption of dairy. What doctor suspected now was 'Cow Milk Protein Allergy'.
None of the family members believed that Baby A could suffer from this allergy. They were hearing about this for the first time and in fact, encouraged me to have dairy, as I was exclusively breastfeeding.
Things started to deteriorate and Baby A whimpered profusely. She was gassy, suffered from diarrhoea and rashes, and was irritable to a great extent. I decided firmly that I would do an elimination diet as I was exclusively breastfeeding her. Kicking out Mr R became the sole purpose of my life. Mr R was undervaluing the power of a new mom. I was prepared to do anything to shoo him away.
The voyage of my dairy-free life started - it encompassed the non-consumption of butter, ghee, milk, cheese, curd, ice cream, reading of food labels carefully if they had any milk solids, switching to soy, cutting down on dinner dates and eating home cooked food.
It has been 7 months since I've stopped taking any dairy products and Mr R has disappeared. And, no, I don’t miss eating dairy products as all I see now is an ecstatic and a playful child.
I am glad that I took a stance and worked towards kicking off Mr R from baby’s bum.
Cow Milk Protein Allergy
CMPA, in layman terms, is nothing but a reaction to the protein found in cow milk by the immune system. The reaction can cause an injury to the stomach and intestines. Do not mix it up with lactose intolerance.
Symptoms of CMPA are very diverse; skin rash, vomiting, abdominal pain, blood in stool and diarrhoea to name a few.
Diagnosis - You should see a doctor if your child has any of the above symptoms. Also, the doctor would see the child’s condition once you are put on an elimination diet.

The Rainy season brings back all the memories of our childhood days and each one of us has speacial joy of rainy season
It was drizzling since the morning. Sabita had just finished her daily chores and had taken a rest in the afternoon when she heard the increase of the downpour. She looked from the window the rain had increased and so its sound. She had always enjoyed watching rainfall from the window. There was a quiet smile on her face. Then she had the urge of having pakoras, she looked at the clock it was almost 5 in the evening, she thought to herself if she start preparing now the hot pakoras will be ready by the time her son and her husband will be home.
She started cutting vegetables and started to prepare the mixture for the pakoda. She kept the kadhai on the stove and put the flame on. Now she started to fry the first batch of pakoda looking at the clock. It was almost 5:30 and her son was not home. She checked her phone but there was no message nor any missed call. Her first batch of pakodas was ready. She tasted one, and it was perfect for such rainy day. She put the flame to simmer and called her son. He had been to his friend’s house. “Hello maa!” came the voice from other side. “ Hello, when are you coming home, its raining and getting darker” exclaimed Sabita. “I have made pakodas for you”
“Oh! Maa. We are having a group study to complete this science project I want to stay at Rahuls place only. I will have those pakodas next day. And its raining very heavily right now”. Said Pravin and kept the phone.
Sabita was disheartened. How she had wished to see the delight on the face of drenched son after seeing the hot pakodas. She took a long sigh and continued with the next batch. She thought she would complete it by the time her husband will be back and can have a nice tea time with hot pakodas. Her phone rang, she was frying her last batch now, it was her husband calling.
“Hello” said Sabita keeping the phone on loudspeaker. “. Hello!” said her husband “Listen, Don’t prepare dinner for me. I have meeting today and will be late dinner are arranged here only.” She took a long breath and said “Ok” and ended the call even when she wanted so much to tell her to come home early and say lets have some hot pakoras together.
She finished making the pakodas and looked at for a while not knowing what to do next. Then she made a cup of masala tea for herself. She took the cup of tea in one hand and the bowl of pakodas on the other and sat on the sofa near the window pane and gazed at the rain and went back to memory lane back to the days of her childhood. When her mother use to make pakodas for her and her siblings so that they would remain inside during the rain. How they use saviour the pakoras and fight over the last piece.Then beautifully her mother would break it into equal pieces to end their fight. Yay I Did It! – Exclusively Breastfed My Baby – My Joyful Journey!
I still remember very clearly, my breastfeeding journey began much before the little one had arrived; I feel this is because I was adamant that I wanted my child to be breastfed entirely. So I was on a mission. I researched everything so well, was speaking to my pre-natal coaches and gathering tips from my mom, friends, and most importantly reading up as much as possible. So finally, when the day arrived for the first latch, my son had no problem latching on right away. So basically, I made sure that I was aware of the techniques. Also, despite a C-section delivery, the first prevalent myth was busted right there that you can't feed comfortably if you have a C-section.
I had a late pregnancy and was always doubtful if I would be able to have a healthy pregnancy or not. So I made sure I was doing three things religiously -first, reading up on pregnancy and post-pregnancy care. Second, eating right during and significantly after pregnancy, and last but not the least exercising. One more thing that goes without saying is the support of your spouse, which is the most important. I remember tagging along with my husband to as many prenatal classes as possible, so he also understands the process easily.
There can’t be anything more comforting than a supporting husband. I significantly remember the first three months being the toughest for a first-time mom, most especially the feeding sessions, which last for 20 minutes each. Then comes the burping process right after. Then the diaper change if needed and before you know it, it’s time again for the next feed. Every two hours, the child requires a feeding session. So, I was able to keep up and complete the three months with my baby gaining more weight than projected. We kept going at this pace, making sure I was feeding my baby every two hours.
Okay, I want to emphasise and, as I do, tell every new mom that I meet, to follow this schedule. It will help to set up a routine for you and your baby and fetch you some me-time while the baby sleeps. Because my baby was on a clock,I knew exactly what time I needed to feed him. So if you happen to schedule their bath time and feeding times correctly, their sleep time will fall in place without any hassles. Trust me when I say this, I had prepared a timetable for my baby by the end of six months. It just made life much simpler. Of course, there were good and not so good days, but that is all a part of the journey!
There are peaks and valleys with breastfeeding, and sometimes you will thoroughly enjoy it, and sometimes you will resent it. But in the end, you will not regret that you stuck with it, even though you did not feel that joy 100% of the time. When you are in a valley, be rest assured that the joy you have felt while feeding in the past will reappear, and you will be glad you pushed through and reap the benefits for a long time to come.
