How to Do a Pedicure at Home - Get Soft, Healthy and Glowing Feet
Beautifully groomed and feet speak volumes about your overall health. In our day-to-day hectic lifestyle, we often neglect to take care of our feet. Just imagine the amount of hard work our legs and feet do - be it walking, jogging, experiencing new shoe bites - the list goes on! Surely our feet need more care and attention than we tend to give them. So here we present you a step-by-step guide to a spa pedicure at home!
Step by Step Instructions for Doing a Home Pedicure
Pamper your feet with a pedicure at home with all natural ingredients. Follow our simple, quick and step-by-step guide for doing a pedicure at home naturally.
What You Will Need
Pumice stone
Warm water
Nail file
Cotton pads
Cuticle cream
Moisturizing Cream
Foot Scrub
Fresh and clean towel
Cuticle pusher
Epsom salt
Corn cutter/ foot filer
Nail paint remover
Nail paint of your choice
Nail cutter
Steps
1. Remove the Old Nail Paint
The first step to start with the pedicure is to remove the remnants of your old nail paints. Just dab nail polish remover on the cotton pads and massage on your nails to remove the paint.
2. Cut and File Your Nails
The second step is to prepare your nails. Clip the nails carefully using a nail cutter and be careful while clipping the edges so as to not to make it too deep. Shape up the nails using a filer. Also, smoothen the rough edges using the filer and try to file them in a single direction, the back and forth motion will weaken the nails.
3. Apply the Cuticle Cream
Cuticle cream softens the cuticles on your nails. Before you soak your feet into the warm water, apply some cuticle cream on the nails. You could apply a combination of olive oil and coconut oil instead of store-bought cuticle cream. Coconut oil softens the cuticles and prevents dryness. Olive oil also boosts healthy nails and cuticles by penetrating the skin and nails.
4. Relax and Soak Your Feet
Now it’s time to relax and soak your feet in the warm water tub. This is the best and most relaxing step of the pedicure! Soak your feet for fifteen minutes, and you can put some refreshing bath salts (or Epsom salt) and 2 tablespoon vinegar in this water. Epsom salts have a relaxing effect on the tired and aching muscles of the feet. Baking soda and lemon also work great on the dead skin. To give a rejuvenating spa-like experience, just put in some rose petals in the water tub.
5. Remove the Dead Skin
Take out one foot at a time from the water and dry with a towel. Use a cuticle pusher to push back the cuticles and trim them. Next, buffer the heels to remove the dead skin. If you have cracked heels and hard skin with calluses on the heels, use a corn cutter to remove the stubborn dead skin and then use a foot filer or a pumice stone to brush out the remaining dead skin cells on the soles and sides of the feet.
6. Scrub and Massage Your Feet
After the dead skin is removed, soak your feet again into the water to remove all the dirt, and dry them using a towel. Now, apply a good foot scrub all over your foot up to the ankles. You can buy a foot scrub available in the local store, or prepare your own foot scrub using natural ingredients.
Ingredients
2 tablespoon coconut oil
4 tablespoon sugar
2-3 drops of tea tree essential oil (optional)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon honey
Method
Mix all the ingredients to form a fine paste with sugar granules.
This homemade scrub can be made with many combinations of natural ingredients. You can also use oatmeal powder, walnut shell powder, etc. according to your preference. The best part about the homemade scrub is that all the ingredients are easily available and will exfoliate your skin without any harsh chemicals. Massage your ankles, heels, fingers, and soles of the feet well using the scrub, and don’t forget the skin in between the toes!
7. Moisturize
After you scrub away the dead skin, wash your feet and dry them. Next, apply a moisturizer and gently massage the feet with hands. Use a deep moisturizer to moisturize your heels, soles and ankles, especially during winters.
You can also make your own foot moisturizer with the following ingredients:
Shea butter – 3 tablespoon
Lavender essential oil – 4-5 drops
Coconut oil – 2 tablespoon
Almond oil – 1 tablespoon
Method
Melt some Shea butter in a microwave safe container and add the almond oil and coconut oil. Mix the oil blend and let it cool down to room temperature.
Once cooled, add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the oil blend, and freeze it for 2 hours. Store the same in an airtight container and use it as and when required.
Tip: The lavender essential oil gives a refreshing aroma to the moisturizer and also possesses anti-inflammatory properties.
8. Apply Nail Paint
Once you’re done with the moisturizing part, next apply a nice nail paint of your choice. Using a toe separator is highly recommended while you apply the nail paints as it prevents smudging. You can also go for a nail art if it interests you, or just paint thin even layers of your favourite colour.
9. Finishing Touch
You’re almost done once you finish off with the final touches. Just wipe the smudges (if any) with a cotton pad dipped in a nail polish remover. Apply a final transparent shiner coat on top of the nail paint to give it a glossy finish. You’re good to go!
Important Points to Consider While Doing Pedicure at Home
Consider the following important points while doing a pedicure with home ingredients:
If you have chapped heels and dead skin clogging in your feet, consider scrubbing your feet with a pumice stone twice a week when taking a bath. It helps reduce dead skin accumulation and keeps your feet soft and glowing.
We all love to paint our nails, but it’s important to keep your nails free of nail paints once in a while. Over-application of nail paints can cause brittle and unhealthy nails.
Consult a medical professional in case of any infection or colour change on the nails.
Be extra cautious in case you have any injury, cuts or wounds on your feet. It is better to let the wound heal completely before going for a pedicure.
Caution: It’s better to avoid indulging in any fish spa or pedicure as it is considered unsafe for your feet, and can also cause HIV or Hepatitis C.
FAQs
Read on to find out some frequently asked questions on feet care.
1. What Is the Best Thing to Soak My Feet In?
Nowadays, several varieties of bath salts and spa products are available in the store which you can use to soak your feet in after a long tiring day! However, we highly recommend soaking your feet in 2 tablespoons Epsom salt and 1 tablespoon vinegar. It soothes your aching soles and removes dead skin.
2. What Does Epsom Salt Do for Feet?
Epsom salt is believed to be full of anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. Soaking your feet in a solution of Epsom salt and warm water relieves aches and inflammations, heals any underlying skin infections, nail fungus and small wounds. It also relieves stress.
3. Does Pedicure Remove Tan?
Yes, of course! Roaming in the sun will cause tanning on your feet. A pedicure can remove the tan from your feet if you use the correct ingredients. For instance, lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent; you can mix it with sugar and scrub twice a week to remove the tan. Alternatively, you can also choose to go for a de-tan pedicure.
4. Can I Get a Pedicure If I Have Nail Fungus?
Yes, you can get a pedicure even if you have a toenail fungal infection. A regular pedicure can even help keep the fungal infection at bay, but you need to be careful about a few things. If you visit parlours for your pedicure, make sure that you carry your own pedicure tools and also inform the staff about the infection. Ensure that the products used are free of harsh chemicals and are skin friendly. Follow a routine for your feet care, wash them regularly and pat dry before wearing your shoes.
5. How Long Should I Wait to Wear Socks After a Pedicure?
Ideally, it’s better to wait for about 10-12 hours before you wear socks after a pedicure. But in case you have to, just blow dry your feet to dry the nail paints and apply a cling wrap on your feet and then put on your socks to retain the moisture and effect of the pedicure.
Healthy and glowing feet are signs of a strong personality and also reflect how much you care for your body. The above DIY pedicure tips will ensure that you have a glorious spa-like experience at home!

Hypotonia in Babies - Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis
Whenever we use our muscles for movement, we either stretch or contract them. The muscle tension here adds resistance to this movement. If this muscle tension is higher, it is hypertonia, and if it is lower, it is hypotonia. So, let us remove all the confusion and study hypotonia in toddlers and infants.
What Is Hypotonia?
It would be important to understand the meaning of muscle tone to understand hypotonia. Muscle tone is the amount of tension in your muscle when at rest. When children cannot sit properly and keep flopping down, they typically have hypotonia. The disease in itself is called floppy infant syndrome. Muscle tone develops during pregnancy; however, premature babies do not have appropriate muscle tone as they are delivered. However, hypotonia in premature babies is usually temporary due to being delivered before time.
Causes of Hypotonia in Babies
Hypotonia is not a condition in itself. It arises from various other health issues. It can be caused due to a birth injury or conditions of the spinal cord, brain, and nerves. These three organs are closely related to muscle development and control.
So, the causes of hypotonia in infants can be:
Cerebral Palsy
Down Syndrome
Nerve Damage may be due to birth injury
Prader-Willi syndrome
Malformation or brain damage may be due to lack of oxygen supply at the time of birth
Muscular dystrophy
Trisomy 13
Environmental issues or infections
There is a substance called myelin that covers the nerves. It provides insulation to the nerve fibers and helps carry messages to and from your brain. Supposedly, the myelin gets damaged, the signals travel abnormally.
In a few cases, it is difficult to determine the cause of hypotonia. It is called benign congenital hypotonia.
Symptoms of Hypotonia
Following are hypotonic symptoms in a baby:
Due to bad control of neck muscles, the head flops.
Difficulty feeding.
Difficult to handle the kid due to flopping or limping kid.
Weak cry
Very flexible joints
When the child is lifted, the child feels limp. They might slip through your hands. So, be careful while lifting.
Not able to take the weight over feet after 4 months of age
Not able to lift and bend the legs and arms when the child lays on their back.
Impact of Hypotonia on Infants
Following are the impacts of hypotonia on infants:
The child gets tired easily even after a little physical activity
Delayed development of gross motor skills’ e.x., a child may not be able to sit by 10 months of age or walk until 18 months of age.
The child prefers sedentary activities.
Sometimes the muscles of the mouth might get affected too, which results in delayed speech.
The child prefers to sit in a rounded shoulder posture.
The child cannot maintain an upright posture for a long time.
Swallowing and sucking might be difficult for the child.
The legs and arms of kids suffering from hypotonia will hang straight. It will not bend at hips, elbows, and knees.
The child will not be able to bear any weight on their shoulder and leg muscles.
Hypermobile joints
Diagnosis of Hypotonia in Babies
Since there are multiple causes behind hypotonia, it might take time to diagnose hypotonia. The doctor might ask you a series of questions regarding your family’s genetic and medical history. He will also be keen to know the course of your pregnancy, your delivery details, and whether the child witnessed any seizures after birth. The child will go through a physical examination to check:
Sensory skills
Motor skills
Coordination
Balance
Reflexes
Mental status
To be very sure and to draw a conclusion, the doctor might order some tests like:
Blood tests
MRI or CT scan of the brain
EEG or Electroencephalogram to calculate the electrical activity of the brain
EMG or Electromyography to calculate the performance of the muscles and nerves
Muscle Biopsy: Here, the doctor will take the kid’s sample of muscle tissue and study it under the microscope.
Genetic tests
Spinal Tap: It is used to determine the pressure in the spine. The doctor will also take a sample of the spinal fluid for further testing.
How Is Hypotonia Treated in Babies?
Once the doctor figures out the cause behind the disease, the treatment follows. Different types of therapies might help strengthen the muscles and improve coordination. Like:
1. Occupational Therapy
It helps the child develop fine motor skills.
2. Sensory Stimulation Program
It helps improve the child’s response to sound, sight, smell, touch, and taste.
3. Physical Therapy
It further enhances the child’s control of their movements. The child might gain strength and improve muscle time with time.
4. Speech-Language Therapy
It is especially for kids with problems in swallowing, breathing, and speaking.
Exercises/Activities to Cure Low Muscle Tone in Babies
Following activities or exercises will help an infant to improve muscle tone:
1. Feed Well
Make sure the child eats properly. Give food in small intervals. If the child requires support while eating, please provide them with proper support.
2. Post Crawling
Once the child has started to crawl, make them crawl on different surfaces. Like carpet, pillows, hardwood, grass, and stairs. But carefully.
3. Toy Positioning
Keep toys in different positions to encourage them to reach the place and get the toys. Once the kid can stand and walk, make them walk on different surfaces. Place toys in a way that the child squat and run to take them.
Following are the activities for a child:
1. Laundry
Make the child pull and push the filled laundry bag around the house. You can fill the bag with toys or anything.
2. Tug of War
Hold the rope from one side and let the child pull it for 10-15 seconds in a go. Put something soft behind them in case they fall.
3. Bouncing
Make the child sit on the therapy ball. Bounce the child up and down. You can also roll the ball front, back, and sideways to up one level.
4. Animal Walks
Make them do crab walks, snake crawl, bear walk, and bunny hop. These walks work on many muscles and help put weight on the joints.
5. The Ball Game
Make them kick, throw, catch and hit the ball.
6. Fine Motor Skills
Make the child do a lot of hand exercises so that later they can write and draw well. Make them use spray bottles to water the plants.
When to Consult a Doctor?
Floppy baby syndrome life expectancy is sometimes quite low. Mostly, hypotonia can be diagnosed at birth. But in a few cases, it does not become clear until they get a little old. The clear sign of hypotonia is: the child not meeting the developmental milestones.
In such a scenario, discuss your child’s growth with the doctor. The doctor will do a physical examination and might ask to conduct a few tests in case of doubt.
In the case of an adult, if sudden symptoms appear, consult a doctor immediately.
Prognosis
The underlying condition defines the outcome of this disease. Hypotonia can be a lifetime disease. Or in some cases, the muscle tone might improve with time. Many milder cases might not even witness developmental delays. Some children might acquire gross motor skills a little late. Most children improve with continuous therapy over time. But few sensitive cases may require wheelchairs or walkers and other assistive equipment for day-to-day activities.
A hypotonic child might need support for daily activities, the most being their parents’ emotional and mental support. Do not compare your child. Do not be saddened that your child’s development is delayed or that your child is a certain way. Be their support. Therapy might improve things over time. Do not panic and listen to what the doctor suggests.

Parents Role in Children's Growth and Development
Parents are the greatest and the first ideals or role models for any growing babies; it is rightly said that whatever the child learns first is from the family, especially the parents. It felt true when I became a mother two years ago. Babies have excellent observation skills, and they grasp things fast; once they see us doing something. Their next step will be to do it independently, so you need to be very cautious with your actions.
One day I was straightening my hair, and my son was watching me; I completed my task and kept the straighter on the bed and left the room too. I thought of keeping it back once it cooled down. I considered putting it away once it had cooled off. Fortunately, my son did not enter the room for several hours, but when the lights were turned on, I saw him in the room, holding the straighter and doing the same thing I was doing; at that point, I got goosebumps and wondered what would have happened if he had entered the room immediately after the straighter was placed. It was hot, and anything could have happened; he could have burnt his hand or cheek if he had taken it near the face. This was just a small act; imagine you and your husband quarrel in front of the baby? Then? What next? The baby would grasp your words, and those words could impact the child in a wrong way.
Dear parents, children are like water; they take the space of the vessel you pour them in. Instil good ideas in your youngster to help them become a great person. And, once again, your actions are critical; be mindful of your negative behaviours and never make the baby suffer due to something you don't want the infant to do in the future.

Every child deserves a basic respect
Mom,dad.No comparison please !!
We live in a world where everyone is in constant competition with each other and with oneself. In this race of proving ourselves better than others, most of whom don't even have any significant place in our lives, we often don't realize that unknowingly we are pushing our kids beyond limits in name of making their future.
Gone were the days when festivals and social gatherings were actually meant to meet friends & relatives. Now these are mere ways to show our status and luxurious life style, most of the time if not always. And unfortunately our children are also becoming our status symbol, a trophy with which we can boast in front of others. My daughter is a fantastic singer, my son won a trophy last week etc etc. Little do we realise that our kids have an individual identity. Their interest might not match with our expectations. The worst part of this is comparison of children, might be among siblings, classmates, neighbours , relatives etc and most of the time irrespective of their age, their interests, their performance in various fields apart from academics. This has been traditionally considered as a mean of motivating the child to do better but most of the time it affects the child adversely, making them feel inferior, incompetent and leads to low self esteem.
Merely because we brought our kids in this world never means we own them. Every child has the ability to do well, in a field of his/her choice. Our responsibility is to identify that talent and allow them to grow, & at the same time protecting them from the negative influences. But instead we force our unfulfilled dreams on them. When asked most of us reply that we are providing the best of facilities to our kids, which we couldn't even imagine during our childhood. But this doesn't give us a certificate to do whatever we wish to. It is perfectly okay to be busy with our job and career, paying bills is equally important. But nothing can replace those few moments, as little as an hour which you spend with your kid, discussing their fears and inhibitions, showing your trust in their dreams and assuring them that they will always find their parents by their side whatever the circumstances might be. It is so disheartening to read about adolescent depression and young kids committing suicide, but just assuming that it can never happen to our children is nothing else but negligence. It's of utmost importance to make them understand that nothing is end of life however bad it might appear to be. Only condition is to keep putting efforts and that they always have the helping hands of their parents with them.
It's high time when we should understand, accept and respect the unique identity of our children. One shoe doesn't fit all so what was correct during our childhood and with one kid might not go the same way for other. Be the support system of your child, appreciate the good and correct or modify the bad without hurting their self esteem. Because however young or old your child might be, he or she deserves a basic respect. Read more

Positive Mind Leads to Healthy Life
First and foremost, a huge thank you to the entire gynaecological and paediatric community for supporting all aspiring parents and new parents on their parenting journey. We go through a number of uncertainties as a pregnant woman and as a new mother throughout this beautiful journey.
All I've learned on my journey is that everyone is different and that everyone's body reacts differently. We may experience highs and lows, but how we handle them directly impacts your child. We instil in them the importance of remaining strong and cheerful from the moment they are born. Talking to your baby regularly, sharing our emotions, indulging ourselves, and, most importantly, instilling happy thoughts in our minds helps the baby grow beautifully on the inside. The term "beauty" in this context refers to a healthy mind.
In my own experience, my husband and I tested positive for COVID-19 in my sixth month of pregnancy. Unfortunately, my husband also had a fracture at the same time. Initially, I had serious concerns about him and my baby. I began talking to my child about my anxieties and requested him to help me get out of the situation to relieve my stress. To my surprise, it proved beneficial, and we could come out of the situation successfully. My optimistic and strong mind helped me a lot in this situation.
Whatever goes wrong, we have our saviours and warriors (Doctors) who have done an incredible job in providing us with bundles of joy even in these testing times. Other women who have sailed in the same boat may better understand my particular experience, but there are still a few untold experiences that may inspire us. The most important key to accessing our lovely experiences is self-motivation.
So, aside from staying at home and staying safe, I'd like to say; Stay Strong and Stay Positive!

A. Typically, your bump becomes noticeable during your second trimester. Between 16-20 weeks, your body will start showing your baby's growth. For some women, their bump may not be noticeable until the end of the second trimester and even into the third trimester. The second trimester starts in the fourth month.
