Weight Gain during Second Pregnancy
Are you planning a surprise for your kid by gifting him a little brother or sister? Sure he will be super-excited. Planning a second child could be exciting but dealing with pregnancy symptoms can make you nervous. So, are you ready to deal with the pregnancy vibes again? Let us assure you that you are not alone in the journey of second pregnancy.
Is Weight Gain During the Second Pregnancy Different from the First One?
No two pregnancies are same. Although you will be familiar with pregnancy symptoms after having your first kid, there are many things that will be different in the second pregnancy. One of the major differences in your second pregnancy will be related to your weight. In your second pregnancy, you might put on more weight as compared to the first pregnancy.
How Is it Different?
During your first pregnancy, the weight gain process could be slow, and your body may be fit, but in the second pregnancy, you may gain weight faster. However, the amount of weight could be extra or less depending upon the physique of the women.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, some women are likely to gain the same amount of weight which she gained during her first pregnancy. In some women, who could not shed their extra weight after having first kid, would gain some more weight because the starting point of that women is excess itself. You may even feel the movements of the baby much early as compared to first pregnancy.
What Causes More Weight Gain in the Second Pregnancy?
Here are some of the reasons which will help you to understand why you are gaining more weight in second pregnancy:
Being Overweight After the First Pregnancy
Very few women can conceive the second time with a fit body. This is because shedding extra weight gained during first pregnancy is difficult. To get fit requires lots of time and a routine workout, but unfortunately, lots of time is devoted to taking care of your growing kid. Therefore, women conceiving right after their first pregnancy could find it difficult to be physically fit and end up being overweight. In conclusion, it means that your weight will be more than that you have gained during your first pregnancy.
Baby Bump Starts Showing up Early
During your first pregnancy, your friends or family may not have realised that you could be pregnant until your bump would have started showing up and is prominent (15 weeks above). But in case of your second pregnancy, your belly would show up very early (between 12-15 weeks). The reason can be that the uterus does not go back to its normal shape after giving birth to the first child which means, when you are pregnant for the second time, it stretches faster.
The Position of the Baby is Lower
First pregnancy stretches out the abdominal and skin muscles and these muscles remain weak. As a result, during the second pregnancy, the abdominal muscles are unable to support your baby well in a comfortable position, which makes your baby positioned lower in the abdomen. This will not harm your baby in any way; the baby will be safe. But your baby being in this position could be both advantageous and disadvantageous for you. The advantage is that it will be easy for you to breathe and eat during second pregnancy as compared to the first pregnancy and the disadvantage is that it will increase the urination frequency. This could be due to pressure on the pelvic area and bladder.
Changes in Hormonal and Metabolic Activity
During your first pregnancy, the body undergoes many changes and but these changes happen slowly when you are pregnant for the first time. It includes all the physiological changes like weight gain, increases in the size of the uterus, changes in the skin tone, increase in pigmentation on skin etc. But during your second pregnancy, because your body has undergone all the metabolic and hormonal changes earlier, the body will react faster to the changes as compared to that of first pregnancy.
Tips to Take Extra Care during Second Pregnancy
Follow these tips to take good care of you during your second pregnancy:
Eat healthy food during your second pregnancy also.
Consume lots of fluid, especially water and fresh fruit juices. Don’t go for preservative juices
Have lots of fibrous food and fruits in your diet.
With prior consultation with your doctor try to add easy exercises to your routine, at least a brisk walk will keep you healthy and fit.
Try not to bend during when you are pregnant, also don’t lift heavy things, it could increase back pain.
Try to comfort yourself by using a pillow in between your legs or place it behind your back for more support.
Consult your doctor if you feel suspicious about your body and health.
The second baby will bring lots of love and happiness to your family again. No need to worry about the physiological changes that happen during this period. If you workout daily and follow a diet plan before planning your second baby, you won’t gain additional weight in your second pregnancy. So, be assured and extend your family with the little angel!

Preterm Labour - Causes, Signs and Treatment
Pregnancy brings with itself a bundle of mixed emotions, ranging from ecstatic joyfulness to worrisome anxiety about the baby and yourself. Extra precautions are always taken to ensure that the baby doesn’t face any issues and there isn’t any exertion on the body. Another aspect that worries mothers a lot is the fear of going into labour a lot earlier than expected.
What is Premature Labour?
On a general note, any pregnancy usually carries on for a period of approximately 40 weeks or so. However, in certain cases, there are chances of the labour beginning a lot earlier than completion of the time period. Such premature labour usually happens prior to completing 37 weeks of your pregnancy. The contractions of the uterus trigger the cervix to prepare for labour and it begins to open up. This may lead to your baby being born prematurely, which has its own set of challenges and health-related issues.
What Causes Preterm Labour?
Here are some of the causes of preterm labour.
1. Presence Of More Than One Baby
In special cases, a mother could be pregnant with twins or triplets, and in rare cases even more than that. In such conditions, the chances of premature labour being triggered are higher since there already is quite a lot of pressure on the uterus and the cervix.
2. Infections In The Vaginal Area
Certain women suffer from a bunch of infections during pregnancy such as urinary tract infection, kidney infections, vaginal infections and so on. Few of them might be suffering from sexually transmitted diseases, too. Presence of these infections might lead to preterm labour.
3. High Fever During Pregnancy
If the pregnant woman is suffering from illnesses and diseases, which lead to a fever that is more than a 101 degrees, the body may choose to go into labour on its own.
4. Vaginal Bleeding
Certain vaginal bleeding may be the reason to cause preterm labour to take place. Such kind of a bleeding is usually observed post 20 weeks of being pregnant.
5. Pre-Existing Health Issues
Many women might be suffering from chronic health problems even before pregnancy which might get stronger during it. Diabetes, kidney problems, high blood pressure and many others put undue stress on the body and may result in preterm labour.
6. Previous Abortions
If the woman has had more than one abortion prior to the current pregnancy, most of which could be in the first trimester, or even a couple of them in the second trimester, then the risk of preterm labour taking place is higher in such cases. The uterus loses its strength in being able to hold the baby to full growth and might trigger labour.
7. Weight Issues
Having improper weight always leads to problems during pregnancy. Being overweight puts pressure on the body and its systems to support both the mother and the child, and being underweight can cause nutrition-related problems as well as strength and immunity issues. This, in combination, could also cause the body to force preterm labour into taking place.
8. Thrombophilia
Thrombophilia is a condition where the body is susceptible to thrombosis. The blood in the body suffers from hypercoagulability, which leads to the formation of blood clots randomly within the blood vessels themselves. This is quite a serious condition and, amongst other effects, can cause preterm labour, too.
9. In-Vitro Fertilization
If a woman, post undergoing IVF, gets pregnant with only a single foetus, it has been observed that her chances of going into preterm labour are slightly higher than usual.
10. Consecutive Quick Pregnancies
There needs to be a substantial time between two pregnancies for the body to recover and be prepared for the next one. If the consecutive time between the last birth and the current pregnancy is less than a year or so, the chances of preterm labour happening for the current pregnancy are quite high.
11. Lifestyle Choices
Various lifestyle choices directly affect the health of the baby as well as the term of pregnancy. Smoking, drinking, illegal drug use, sedentary life choices, standing for long hours, are all factors that can put pressure on the body and lead to preterm labour.
12. Stress
Mental health is a major factor that affects the pregnancy. Being constantly stressed and anxious about work and family issues, or facing domestic violence or emotional abuse, and constantly high-wired situations at home could push your body towards preterm labour.
Signs and Symptoms
Preterm labour symptoms can be spotted with good observation, and acting in time can help resolve the issue.
Lower backache, that doesn’t reduce even after changing positions.
Contractions that are spaced out by 10 minutes or even lesser.
Extreme cramping resembling menstrual-cramps in the lower section of the abdomen. These could be similar to gas trouble and may also result in loose motions.
Unexpected leaking of fluid from the vagina.
Most major symptoms of a typical onset of flu. Feeling of nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and the body’s refusal to consume liquids.
A build-up of pressure on the vagina as well as the pelvic region.
Increased and speedy discharge in the vaginal tract.
Light coloured bleeding from the vagina.
What Does Contractions Feel Like?
Certain contractions during pregnancy are called as Braxton-Hicks contractions. This is where the uterine muscles begin to contract within, hardening the abdomen. On the contraction fading away, the muscles become soft again. These contractions are mostly irregular without any specific frequency, and usually, do not cause your cervix to open.
However, the moment these contractions become frequent and can be nailed down to a frequency of happening between 10 to 12 minutes for quite some time, these could indicate preterm labour and the doctor can check if the cervix has opened up.
How to Check for Contractions?
Hold your fingertips over the abdominal area of the body.
Check if you can feel the contracting and loosening of the uterine muscles.
Note down the times when each contraction takes place and how long they last.
Attempt to stop the contractions by changing your position, relaxing, and drinking some water.
If the contractions continue for an hour with the same frequency, or the conditions worsen and severe pain starts setting, it’s time to consult a doctor.
What to Do If You Are Experiencing Premature Labour?
The first thing to do is to go and pee and empty your bladder fully.
Lie down on your bed and turn to your left side. This helps in slowing down the contractions, which may also stop them completely.
Do not lie on your back. This is a standard position to accelerate the contractions.
Sometimes, lack of water and dehydration can result in contractions, too. Drink multiple glasses of water until you’re full.
Continue keeping a track of your contractions and check if they remain constant or if they’re slowing down.
Diagnosis and Test for Premature Labour
Some of the tests to diagnose premature labour are,
1. Examination Of The Pelvis
The doctor might choose to check the uterus and examine it to see if it properly firm and tender, while simultaneously understanding the baby’s position and size. Once he’s assured that the water has not broken and there’s no placenta covering the cervix, your cervix might then be further examined to check if it has started opening.
2. Ultrasound Monitoring
The doctor might want to check the length of the cervix and, hence, choose to conduct a transvaginal ultrasound. The ultrasound helps obtain a better understanding the position of the baby, realize the amount of fluid inside, and make an assessment of weight.
3. Observing The Uterus
In case you are having contractions, the doctor might want to get more information related to them, with a uterine monitor. This device helps assess and calculate the length of your contractions as well as the frequency between them.
4. Specific Laboratory Tests
The doctor will go ahead and use a cotton swab to take a sample of vaginal secretions for checking infections. This also helps check for signs of fetal fibronectin, that functions like a strong glue, bonding the uterus lining with the fetal sac. A urine sample will also be collected to check for any bacterial or viral presence.
Treatment to Prevent Preterm Labour
No medicines or surgeries can prevent labour from happening once it has begun. There are certain recommendations that your doctor might ask you to consider.
Medications
Depending on what stage of pregnancy the preterm labour conditions might occur, your doctor may suggest the use of corticosteroids to speed up the lung growth of the baby. These are mostly recommended if the pregnancy is between 24 weeks to 34 weeks. In the final stages, if your delivery is imminent within 34 weeks to 36 weeks of pregnancy, and you haven’t had a dosage of corticosteroids previously, then your doctor might ask you to have them.
In certain cases, magnesium sulfate is also recommended by the doctor. If a baby is born before 32 weeks of pregnancy, there are chances of incomplete brain growth. Administering magnesium sulfate reduces the risk of this from happening, leading to avoiding conditions such as cerebral palsy
The final frontier that can be taken in cases of preterm labour is delaying it temporarily. Tocolytics are a specific kind of medication that help stop the contractions for a small period of time. These mostly last only as long as two days. However, this time might be utilized by the doctors to allow the corticosteroids in accelerating the baby growth as much as possible or shifting you to another hospital where facilities to support premature babies are available. Pregnant women suffering from high blood pressure are not recommended to take tocolytics.
Surgery
In very specific cases, a doctor might recommend you to undergo cervical cerclage, a surgical procedure. This is primarily beneficial to women who have a short cervix. This procedure is mostly recommended only if your pregnancy is below 24 weeks, your previous pregnancies have resulted in premature deliveries, and your cervix length is less than 25mm in length, as revealed from an ultrasound.
In this procedure, the cervix is closed by using strong sutures and stitching it shut. As you complete 36 weeks of your pregnancy, the sutures are removed so that natural labour may take place.
What Can You Do to Prevent Premature Labour?
Here are some precautionary measures to prevent preterm labour.
1. Prenatal Care
Prenatal care helps address any medical conditions and take a check of medicines you are on to ensure that you and your baby stay safe during pregnancy.
2. Influenza Shot
Suffering from flu during pregnancy increases your chances of preterm labour. Hence, it is best to get a flu shot as an active preventive measure.
3. Stop Smoking
Opt for nicotine patches, although not ideal, or other ways to wean away from cigarettes, but stop smoking almost immediately, if possible.
4. Opt For Fertility Treatments
It is best to be pregnant with a single child than twins or triplets since that increases the chances of preterm labour.
5. Manage Your Weight
Obesity is a strong cause to trigger preterm labour. Maintain a healthy balanced diet and continue with light exercises and movements as much as you can.
What Impact Does Premature Labour Have on Pregnancy?
A full-term pregnancy is highly essential in ensuring a healthy full-grown baby. Premature labour does not always mean that a delivery will be premature. In case it does happen, such babies are at risk from physical and mental health complications now and later in life. Babies born in less than 24 weeks of pregnancy have a 50-50 chance of survival.
Preterm labour management is absolutely necessary to ensure mitigating chances of premature delivery, without causing harm to the child. By taking preventive measures at the start and opting for treatments if recommended, the chances of premature delivery can be reduced and both the baby and mother can be safe.

Here are some safe Diwali tips for you and your family.
Dos
Buy fireworks only from a government licensed shop.
Always keep the fireworks in a closed safety box.
Store crackers away from sources of fire.
Keep crackers away from toddlers and babies.
Follow the instructions written on the crackers box and follow all the safety precautions.
Burst crackers only in open spaces, like playgrounds and fields.
While lighting ‘rockets’, ensure that they face upward and do not face an open window, door or road.
Light the crackers from an arm’s length distance and not any closer.
Discard the used crackers in a bucket of water.
Always keep buckets of water and blankets ready in case of an accident.
Keep a first aid kit handy when bursting firecrackers to treat minor injuries at home.
Always keep a fire extinguisher nearby to ensure safety during Diwali.
Make sure that kids are wearing appropriate footwear while lighting fireworks.
Park your vehicles in garages.
Make your kids wear light and fitting cotton clothes while bursting crackers.
Don’ts
Don’t burn fireworks and crackers in crowded places, narrow lanes, near sources of ignition or inside the house.
Don’t let your kids burst crackers in your absence.
Don’t keep fireworks in pockets or bags.
Do not examine crackers that were lit but did not burst. Let it go and light a new one.

Avoid loose clothes as they can catch fire quickly. Do not wear clothes made of silk and synthetic material.
Do not keep lit diyas or candles near curtains or inflammable materials.
Do not light multiple firecrackers at once as it can lead to an accident.
Do not use matches or lighters to light up the crackers.
Do not experiment with firecrackers or make your own crackers.

10 Important Lessons, I taught to my toddler to make her independent and responsible.
Just a blink and time flies, and look her growing is such a delightful memory. When she was on her infant I dreamt her to reach on her toddler stage ,because I thought this is the stage where toddlers become more sincere ,more polite, and they could feed themselves independently 😹. However, things can not take place in the same way ,we are expecting.
.
.
What made me convinced to taught her best habits and lifelong lessons??
One day I was sitting on my balcony ,when she had recently learnt ,how to walk and that made her crazy as she wanted to explore everything. She moved to me and asked for my phone , I ignored her request so in response she started hitting me ,crying loudly even. It made me disappointed for a moment but cant help because she was just a kid so this could be my duty to teach her ,what is wrong and right so I took a decision that I will teach her the best habits that can worth fulfilling to her in future because being a mother i am her first teacher. Moreover, when our child is on toddler cycle ,it is called the best time to tech and trained them for everything good and basics, they need. In this time they grab the things quickly with their sharp mind ,which is quite more active then us.
.
.
The First Lesson:-
I started playing some role plays with her ,that kept her cheerful and in these role plays I taught her how to speak with elders ,although her tongue was still not clear .For an instance, as am living with my in-laws so Daada g,Daadi g were the first practice words in an honour of respecting elders. My efforts were working out undoubtedly that exercise took a weak to trained her but the the outcome was worth as she started adding “G “ as suffixes and made everyone smile .Alongside she responds in “Haanji” to every question. That was a bonus to me.
.
.
The second Lesson:-
Whenever she woke up in the morning I asked her to wish good morning to everyone and she thought this is a game ,so she loved to wish all. And when she sleep back in the night “Goodnight was the second word of a day end. The same practice took approximately 10 days to made her perfect for this daily routine and a good manner of a good child.
.
.
The Third Lesson:-
I wanted her to eat her food independently without seeking any support ,alongside I knew it that it is quite hard, because she was only one and half year old and very moody eater to anything.Neverthless, I took that risk ,as I was aware that she will not properly and her stomach stays empty. But no worries because initially being a mother its kind of a tough job but some times we had to be strong . She was eating only one third from her daily routine and the cycle remain same for next 3-4 days but surprisingly after 4 days she was eating much better and after 10 days she becomes an independent eater and loves to eat freely. There is one line i heard from one of my friends “ Insaan ka bacha hai bhukh toh lagegi aur khayega bhi”. And thankful it all worked out.
.
.
The Fourth Lesson:-
She was quite friendly in nature ,that anyone could easily take her to their arms . Undoubtedly,to being friendly is not a bad thing ,but in present scenario its even hard to trust strangers as we heard number of news in crimes. I started telling her the little understanding stories of a watchman and convinced every stranger is a watchman ,and watchman has a scary stick.Although she wasn’t sacred but she started believing that watchman is a bad guy so you shouldn’t go along with the strange folk because they are watchman, this Lesson was a much needed to keep her safe.
.
.
The Fifth Lesson:-
Most of the time, she started crying loudly .So to change this habit of her , I had played a small child role play with her ,included soft toys and made her believe that you are a big girl among them and if you cry loud then they will also cry and got disturbed. It had taken at least 15 days to trained her because it wasn’t a cup of tea to convinced your toddler to not cry loudly without any reason .
.
.
The Sixth Lesson:-
As she got her all required teeth’s, so this is the time when parents usually pushed their kids for Brushing ,morning and evening ,and I am one of them.In addition, the toothpaste you are using it should be fluoride free, without any harmful chemicals .And you should use only a pinch on extra soft brush ,which specially designed for only toddlers ,because their jaws are not that strong to handle hard ones. In beginning, she wasn’t happy to brush ,although she loved to eat the toothpaste😻😹.So I thought to accompanying her,it was fun to brush with her ,she had noticed me that, how I was brushing, and the same she was repeating .That seems like a game to her. In a week, she was fully trained and most of the time she still says“Mumma lets go for brushing teeth’s its a cleaning time.
.
.
The Seventh Lesson:-
Her food timing was very unusual,so I planned to fix the same for her morning breakfast, lunch and the dinner along her snack and milk timings.she had shown number of tantrums to me in the beginning but with time and next couple of days she started asking for everything on time. So every parent has to be more responsible for their offsprings meal timings ,it helps to keep your child healthier.
.
.
The Eighth Lesson:-
To being a parent,we have more affection to our children so we never let them to sleep alone . And trust me this is not a good habit at all . My daughter never sleep alone and she couldn’t,because we never let her since her birth .So it was an hard decision for us too to create this habit in her . So in the beginning what we preferred ,when she asleep we started shifting her to the next room with open doors for safety reasons because if she cry in the night then that helps us to got to know ,along with zero vault bulb for little brightness.Trust me , I and my husband awake whole night and the same will continue till 10 days of her training but after 11th day we started believing that now she can sleep . Because we noticed that whenever she felt tired she usually go to her room for rest. Trust me it also helps to make my daughter more stronger and independent.
.
.
The Ninth Lesson:-
Toddlers are always messy to arrange their toys and my daughter was the messiest one, However, I provided her the toy basket to manage her toys ,respective shelves for soft toys, but kids are kids that we mothers think so. Because we have the softest corner for our kids in our heart. So what I did to make her managed kid for her stuff and keeping back toys in the same place from where she picked up. I started motivating her that you are a good child and good child always keep their toys in their right place and dirty kid always throw their toys and she always like to me that” Mumma I am a good baby na “ and I always appreciated her ,because I think your child always seek appreciations ,that helps them to boost their energy level ,so keep praising and applauding them for any good thing they do in a day.
.
.
The Final one:-
Being a kid they have no sense to wear clean clothes ,until parents noticed. My daughter was the same so Whenever she got some spots on her clothes I started teasing her “ Baby look at your clothes ,they are dirty and wet. She started noticing the spots and feel the awareness of wetness So trust me this task was hardly taken approximately counted 3 days . Now onwards Whenever she got any spot to her clothes, she run immediately to me and asked me to change her clothes and put on clean ones. This made my daughter Tidy child and helps her to maintain the hygiene, which is most essential to maintain distances from number of diseases.
.
.
PS:- Parents are always emotional to their children and this is a human nature, which nobody can denying, but we are the one who are the only well wisher of our kids so creating right path to them is our duty because this will help them to face obstacles in their future. So Sometimes to being strict and rude to your child is not a bad thing, this will be worth full to them and will play essential role to make them a responsible person and human being. Read more
